The original library was housed in what was known as The Leland Center.  This building has since been demolished but was located on the site where the Schroon Lake Health Center now sits.  The library moved into its present location in 1979.

The first regular meeting of the Schroon Lake Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order at 2:12 p.m., November 28, 1978, at the Leland Center.  The library board at that time consisted of:  Mr. John Martin, Director; Mrs. Georgiana Martin, Secretary; Mr. Howard Atkins, Treasurer; Mrs. Beverly Burger; Mrs. Helen Keppler; Mrs. Gertrude Letson; Mrs. Marcia McCoy; Mrs. Cheryl Morris; and Mrs. Freida Wilson.

On March 19, 1979, library board members applied for, and were granted, a provisional charter from the University of the State of New York State Education Department.  Board members at the time were: Mrs. Cheryl Morris, Mrs. Gertrude Letson, Mrs. Marcia McCoy, Mrs. Helen Keppler, Mrs. Beverly Burger, Mrs. Frieda Wilson, and Mrs. Charlotte Rowe.  The date of the granted charter was April 27, 1979.  This 5-year provisional charter became Absolute on July 25th, 1984.
